Why
have we left the “simple” life…the uncomplicated, unfragmented, unbelievably wonderful
life that God speaks about in His Holy Scriptures? When Michael mentions “jumping through all
the hoops” in today’s writing, my mind instantly thought of “March Madness,”
that crazy, wild, complicated, overexcitement all college basketball fans have
come to love…the epitome of most Christians’ lives today times twelve. And the “chance” of reaching the “Final Four”
in life is about as likely as my favorite college team making it in the Hoop
world.
And
what’s wild is the “simple” life isn’t about strategies/methods, recruiting a
team, programs, physical ability, mental ability, schedules, a scoreboard,
etc., etc., etc. Read what Coach Michael
tells us is the simplicity of living the “simple” life.
ABIDING: PARTICIPATING IN
JESUS’ LIFE
excerpt
from page 14 of SIW (used
with permission of ALMI):
One
key word that would describe the Christian community around the world is change.
We want to change what we are, what we do, and our circumstances so
we will be
acceptable
to God. And yet after jumping through
all the hoops prescribed by a particular method or program, change has not
come, and we sense even more deeply our unacceptableness and failure.
If then it is so simple to live a
defeated life, would it not be good news that it is equally easy to live the
victorious life. What is the answer? It will be found in the simplicity of the Gospel – a simplicity
that has been lost in the shuffle of programs, methods, and how-to lists, all
symptoms of unbelief! The answer is not something that we
must do but rather something that we must believe! The great secret of success that has been concealed
from the majority of Christians far too long is this: Christian growth is simply accepting what we have
always had from the beginning, from the first day we gave our lives to Christ! And this simple life – the victorious life – will be experienced only
through the abiding life.
Abundant life is not something to work
for, but rather is something given to be worked from. My acceptance is not based on what I do but rather on what I am. Abundant life does not require that I imitate
Jesus, but that I participate in His life; it does not require that I work to
believe, but that I work because I believe. Be assured of this: If the abundant Christian life requires great
determination, self-will, intellect, talent, and ability, then we are all too
weak, blind, and stupid to ever arrive.
How
then do I experience this abundant life?
How do I discover a life free from sin?
And how can it be mine without effort?
God’s answer is specifically designed to be within the grasp of the
weak, the failure, the unacceptable, the ignorant, the frustrated, and the
hopeless. The answer is the simplicity of the abiding life.
