Just the thought of “freedom from guilt” is something many Christians seem to never enjoy, much less experience the actual freedom.  And yet, as Michael so aptly points out, this is so simple to be realized.  Getting past the past is a great milestone for anyone.

FREEDOM FROM GUILT

                   (used with permission from ALMI):

It is also true that what the “old me” did, the “new me” has never done.  Many Christians are controlled by the guilt of past failures, sins, and events.  Not only does the enemy not allow them to forget their sins, but often their own families and other Christians continue to remind them….

The proof that your life has been exchanged and the “old you” is dead is that whenever you remember or are reminded of the activities of the old you, it makes you somewhat sick!  Why?  Because the “new you” does not align itself with such things.

(1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

It is true that what described the “old you” by way of identity would not at all describe the “new you.”  As Watchman Nee so aptly pointed out in the The Normal Christian Life, when we receive Christ’s life, everything that was true about His life becomes true of our life…What is true about Christ’s life?  It is righteous; it is victorious over the unholy trinity; it is not of this world; and it has overcome all obstacles, just to mention a few.  Therefore, all of these things must also be true of the “new you.”

Michael tells us that freedom from guilt for something that occurred back in the life of the “old me” is simply to realize I am no longer the “old me,” that Christ’s life has been exchanged for the “old me,” and that I am now a “new me.”  Wow!  Why is it then that many Christians never experience this reality?

My answer: the church has a history of leaving newborn Christians in the delivery room without any care, nurturing, and “parenting” of the newborns until they are at least “teens” in the faith.  IF the proper handling of the newborns were exercised, these new Christians would be fed, protected, and nurtured along to a maturity level that would involve knowing who they are in Christ and who Christ is in them.  And guilt (and the self-condemnation that comes along with this false guilt) would be long gone.  If the "new me" is not guilty, and can never be guilty, why would I ever be controlled by the guilt of past failures, sins, and events?  Well, amen.

Every Christian needs to be enjoying life as a Christian (the “new me”, His life!) as Michael and Watchman Nee detail so beautifully!

The Exchanged Life

Thoughts on Michael Wells’ teachings in Sidetracked In The Wilderness - # 35

As mentioned last time, Michael takes us now to the life that can keep us out of the wilderness…or, get us out of the wilderness if we have wandered there…

THE EXCHANGED LIFE

excerpt from pages 104-106 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 101-103 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

…If we take out your inner life and replace it with another, you are no longer “you.”…Exchanging the inner life makes you something quite different than you were before.

This is exactly what happens when a person is born again; he receives a new life and actually becomes a new person.  In fact, he is no longer the same type of human, possessing Adam-life, but is a child of God, acquiring the life of Christ….acceptable, righteous, holy, and triumphant over the unholy trinity.  “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.” (Galatians 2:20).

The old you, consisting of the same outer body but with the Adam-life inside, has been put to death, giving way to the new you with Christ’s life dwelling within.  “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17).  You are a new creation, something different!  At this point we are not concerned about experience, but truth!  What God says, we believe.  We are free from the condition of flesh because of our co-crucifixion with Christ.

Read Romans 6 and discover the spiritual realities of our baptism into Christ; we are set free from the power of sin…

…Baptism (into Christ, not water baptism) must be accompanied by faith, and faith cannot be exercised unless we have been taught what the spiritual realities are.  (this) Baptism is a spiritual reality wherein we can experience freedom from the power of sin and the old nature.  “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death.” (Romans 6:3).

“unless we have been taught” are words that capture the essence of the lives of way too many Christians today…discipleship disappeared from most churches years ago.  A brief Sunday morning emotional experience replaced hours of discipleship each week in the majority of churches.  And without that teaching (discipleship) of the spiritual realities of the life in Christ, living by faith is non-existent for any Christian.

How many Christians KNOW they possess a different inner life?
How many Christians KNOW they are “acceptable, righteous, holy, triumphant over
    the unholy trinity?
How many Christians KNOW their old self with the Adam-life inside has been put
    to death?
How many Christians KNOW Christ’s life dwells within them?
How many Christians KNOW they are free from the condition of flesh and have
been set free from the power of sin?
HOW CAN THEY KNOW IF THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TAUGHT?

Now listen…learning has to be desired.  No one can make someone learn.  But the teaching has to be offered.  And how many will come to learn is left up to each individual…it is their choice.  And God never takes away our choices.  But without the learning, faith cannot be exercised.

New Creation

Why can’t Christianity get it settled once-and-for-all: the Adam-life has been put away with our crucifixion with Christ.  Goodness gracious…it is a simple truth of the Word of God.

Why?  Because the focus has been on the physical (sins) instead of the spiritual (truth).  The choice is never between “truth and error,” but between “truth and sin.”  The “seen” is always more appealing to the flesh than the “unseen.”

NEW CREATION

excerpt from pages 106 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 103-104 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

The spiritual reality of participating in His death is great, for through it we have actually become something new, with the Adam-life put away…

You may not know it, feel it, or experience it, but the day you came to Christ your old nature was removed and replaced with Christ’s life.  What is the significance of this?

In Galatians 2:20…Paul makes it quite clear that something died, and yet he is more alive than he has ever been.  The advantage of our death with Christ is great, for the Adam-life that was so self-centered, insane, and controlled was put to death.  When the Holy Spirit reveals this truth, the release is tremendous.

For instance, the man who had been controlled all his life by the past event of being molested realized that his old self had been put to death.  Not only could he no longer be controlled by the past, but he saw God had even given him a new self that had never been molested.  He had grasped the truth that what had happened to his old man had not happened to his new man.

So, here’s the problem: Scripture says, “The truth shall make you free…If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”  Truth is spiritual.  The Son is the Truth.  The Son is the only one who can free us from the past.  As Michael says, it is a “spiritual reality.”  Those who don’t want to believe that the Son can make them free from the past will live on with their past…in defeat.

Michael Wells makes it so experiential what Scripture has made so clear.  I remember the first thing our pastor told my wife and I when we had just prayed to receive Christ in his office, “Let me show you a great scripture that tells you what has just happened…2 Corinthians 5:17…you are both a new creation in Christ.”  And for 15 years I was so excited about the New Me…who I was in Christ.  I am still excited, 34 years later, but almost 20 years ago Michael Wells introduced me to who Christ is in me!  I had 2 lives to be excited about!!!  Well, let’s not get ahead of where Michael is going in coming chapters!

So, if you are going to go on with Michael and get out of your wilderness, you must believe in the spiritual reality of the new birth, and that the new you IS free from the past!

The Loss of Self Life

Simple breeds easy understanding.  Easy understanding breeds quick change where needed.  Man is born with an Adam-life that cannot walk in unity with God.  A change is necessary.  Michael brings us to the moment of truth regarding the most major decision every individual must make…and a choice for a quick difference can be easily realized.

THE LOSS OF SELF LIFE

excerpt from pages 100-104 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 97-101 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

…How many different forms of inner life are there?  …only two races of inner life, Adam-life or Christ-life…

…the problems do not end with this Adam-life within that hates the commands of God.

…This whole cycle and condition is described by one word: flesh.  The flesh is the condition wherein a man is controlled by something other than God…

…man cannot change the manifestation of the flesh by working harder in the power of the flesh.  Flesh will not improve flesh!

Since flesh is the condition of being controlled by something other than God, a Christian who is drawing upon his own resources and walking in unbelief and self-centeredness will often manifest the same characteristics that an unbeliever does…The flesh will not improve but only strengthen itself; the Bible is quite clear on this point…The more one works to be transformed in the power of the flesh, the worse things will get.

…If we cannot change our inner life, and have learned that lesson all too well, then what are we to do?  The answer is quite ingenious:  We simply exchange it!  Our Adam-life is not to be patched up, as many religions and psychology teach, but put to death and exchanged for a new life!

It is sad that anyone who is not a Christian cannot understand that the inner life cannot be changed.  Lost man goes to great lengths to try and do that.  The saddest thing though is a Christian who abandons the position and power of the Christ-life to “draw upon his own resources and walk in UNBELIEF and SELF-CENTEREDNESS.”  Goodness…how crazy is that?!?  To walk away from being controlled by God and moving to that which is anti-God is the epitome of insanity for a Christian.

The Good News is coming in next week’s writing…man has a choice that brings a quick difference to the inner life…exchange the Adam-life for the Christ-life.  This is the life that can keep one out of the wilderness.
