Over and over, again and again…Michael gives us some astounding thoughts on what true Christianity really is, as compared to years and years of teaching that came our way with erroneous and misleading thoughts that in many ways have caused saints all around the world to be led out into the “wilderness.”  Today’s excerpts from SIW give us some basic, foundational principles that make our journey out of the wilderness so simple.

THE MOMENT BY MOMENT CROSS – Part 3

excerpt from pages 143-144 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 142-144 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

…Have you yet to come to your senses and seen that because of co-crucifixion you are a child of God and can lay aside the struggle that comes from trying to change?  Is it any wonder that Satan wants to blind you from this glorious truth and keep you in a state of looking to yourself to plot some way to overcome the old self?

As a believer you are completely in Christ (Romans 6:6; Ephesians 2:5-6; Colossians 2:10).  Again, the history of Christ becomes our experience and our spiritual heritage.  As Nee succinctly puts it, “God has put me in Christ, and therefore all that is true of Him is true of me.  I will abide in Him.”  Remember that Christian growth is merely accepting what you have always had from the first day you gave your life to Christ.  Your death in Him has already taken place, so how long will you let this rotting old self remain in our house?  He is, you know, beginning to smell, and no matter how you dress him up, you can no longer hide the obvious and fool your loved ones – he is dead!

…We cannot say it enough: Before we can experience the fullness of His life, we must participate in the fullness of His death…we must be firmly rooted in the death of Christ before we will begin to experience His life.

…If we are once again living in defeat, we may also be tempted to think, The teaching doesn’t work!  But that is impossible, simply because it is not something that we do, but rather something that God has done.  It must work; it does work… “That may be, but I still find myself once again living in defeat.”  Again, it is because you saw the cross as a one-time event, as a method, as a cure-all, and not as the moment-by-moment participation that God intends it to be to keep us near to Him.

I think of all the thoughts I was first introduced to after becoming a Christian.  Not by teachers or friends exhibiting maliciousness, nor intentional, nor as one trying to mislead me…simply by their misunderstanding or having been misled previously.  But all of that caused me for 15 years to read and hear many of the same truths Michael shares in his teachings, getting a tinge in my spirit (God’s Spirit in me) to the truth that was there, but never getting complete revelation of all that God had for me.

But thank God for the day that revelation started to flow!!!

Check out in summary form some of the most exciting news Michael shares in this portion of SIW that a Christian can have revelation of:
·         Because of co-crucifixion you are a child of God and can lay aside the struggle that comes from trying to change.
·         As a believer you are completely in Christ.
·         Christian growth is merely accepting what you have always had from the first day you gave your life to Christ.
·         Before we can experience the fullness of His life, we must participate in the fullness of His death.
·         The teaching…is not something we do, but rather something God has done.  It must work; it does work.
·         The cross (is not) a one-time event, as a method, as a cure-all…(it is) the moment-by-moment participation that God intends it to be to keep us near to Him.

Now…for each of us, we would do well to stop and soak on EACH point until God has revealed the “much” of what He has for us.  Just seeing God in the first point is enough to think about starting 2015 out with a completely different outlook for what each day will hold…for those seeing Him for the first time in “laying aside the struggle that comes from trying to change.”

And for all the rest of the points, as we say here in East Texas…”Hooooooooo-boy!”

As we celebrate the birth of Christ today, I say “Thank you, Lord, for ALL it means to me to be a ‘child of God.’”  And, thank you, Michael and Betty (and all that are a part of ALMI, in Colorado, and New Jersey, and around the world), for getting the message out to a hungry bunch of Christians around the world!

Joy to the world!  The Lord is come!

In this incredible, short section of SIW Michael brings us to realize the life of Christ within every Believer is much more than our guarantee of Heaven.  And there are a couple of astounding truths that grip us and will not let go in just this NEXT paragraph…

THE MOMENT BY MOMENT CROSS – Part 2

excerpt from pages 142-143 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 141-142 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

…there is one thing that God will never bend on, and that one thing is faith!  He will become a man to get my attention, He will overlook my sins, He will show me great compassion and mercy, but He will not do away with His demand for faith.  I didn’t realize it, but what I was saying to God was, “If I experience Christ as my life, if I experience the crucifixion of my old self, if all my feelings of inferiority go away, then I will believe what you say.”  I was an unbelieving believer.  Finally I said, “Lord, if I live in defeat all my life and never sense freedom from inferiority and failure, I will still believe that my old self has been crucified.  I have received Christ’s life, and all that is true of Him is now true of me!”  Not long after that, experience followed faith.

It is amazing how specific Scripture is in telling us what God thinks about faith, what faith is, and how we get more faith…and yet, Christianity suffers from lives lived without faith.  Unbelieving Believer…what a testimony.  What a hindrance to receiving what God has provided for His kids.

Gripping truth #1 – “God will not do away with His demand for faith.”
“The just shall live by faith” is not a suggestion.  “According to thy faith…” is not a “maybe.”  Hebrews ch.11 is not a testimony of some strange group of outsiders in Christianity.  (Perhaps “unusual,” but not an extra option.).  “Without faith it is impossible to please God” is a standard of life for a Christian that all of us must recognize and desire to participate in.

Gripping truth #2 – “ ‘I will still believe that my old self has been crucified.  I have received Christ’s life, and all that is true of Him is now true of me!’  Not long after that, experience followed faith.”
It is a harbinger of life as a Christian to know that “experience follows faith.”  Oh that we could believe this, and know our lack of experiencing is tied to our lack of faith.

But, thank the Lord, there is always HOPE, for the One who lived His entire life BY FAITH now lives inside every Believer and IS each Believer’s actual LIFE.  May we learn to abandon SELF to HIM and see HIM bring all that we have been looking for (and far too often trying to “work for” when it has been impossible to attain by our efforts).

Thinking back on the past 30 years of studying, preaching, and pastoring, I know the lack of sharing the “power of the Cross” other than for salvation has been one of my biggest mistakes.  Michael brings to the forefront the great power God has given Christians at the moment we were crucified with Christ, received Christ’s life…were Born Again.

THE MOMENT BY MOMENT CROSS – Part 1

excerpt from pages 139-142 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 138-141 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

Michael begins this section by sharing his indebtedness to Andrew Murray, Jessie Penn-Lewis, Watchman Nee, and F. J. Huegel for their teachings which the Holy Spirit used to make real the teachings of Romans 6 to Michael.

…Ask the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of your heart that He would make the foolishness of the cross not understandable teaching, but revelation, for with revelation comes faith and power to experience what is taught.

…Watchman Nee uses an appropriate analogy when he asks the question, “Am I a Nee because I was born a Nee, or am I a Nee because of my behavior?”…Nee concludes, “I am a sinner because I am born in Adam.  It is a matter not of my behavior but of my heredity, my parentage.”

…There is no way out unless we can somehow change our parentage or line of existence!

God’s solution to the person with faith is complete removal of that life that was with Adam and is cut off from God, that life controlled by sin.  He replaces it with Christ’s life!  As Jessie Penn-Lewis (a great teacher of Cross truths) so often points out in her writings, there is only one way out of Adam, and since we came in by birth, we must go out by death.  Bondage to sin came by birth; deliverance from sin comes by death.  And now just as in Adam we received everything that is true of him, in Christ we receive everything that is true of Christ…

What glorious news that the “old me” I have worked so hard to change was put to death on the cross with Christ…It happened the day I came to Christ!

Those are great words, aren’t they: “not understandable teaching, but revelation, for with revelation comes faith and power to experience what is taught.”  Wow!

It may be that in wanting to “abide” we have neglected the power of the Cross to free us from sin that keeps us at least thinking we are defeated instead of overcomers.  And if we accept that, then how are we going to “abide” in such a way as to experience Christ’s life?  God has told us that we are to take His word “precept upon precept, line upon line.”  Getting things out of order leads to trouble down the line.

What I hear Michael telling us is to:
Reckon ourselves “dead to sin & possessing Christ’s
           resurrection life.”
Appropriate Christ’s “death to sin & resurrection life”
to THE sins in our life, and see His power take them away.

Of course we have to know what “reckon” and “appropriate” mean…

Well, amen.

There is more “power” to come next time…

Living Moment By Moment - Part 2

We pick up where we left off last time by reminding ourselves of “trust, rest, release control.”  All that God allows to come into our lives God is orchestrating all to “keep us ever near His side.”  Let’s see where Michael takes us now…

LIVING MOMENT BY MOMENT – Part 2

excerpt from pages 135-139 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 134-138 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

…the only thing that Satan must accomplish to defeat us is to steal the moment, which he does by reminding us about the past or nudging our fears about the future.

…Many Christians have allowed an incident in the past to continue to steal abundant life from them in moments that stretch into days and then years.  One allows this to happen in dancing with the devil, whose plan is to steal not just one moment, but the whole life!

…At any given moment one is either in the flesh or in the Spirit, tapped into eternal defeat or eternal victory.

…What opens the door (to Christ’s life) is humility, saying that one has nothing or, “I can’t!”  What closes the door is pride, which says, “I can.”  God has so structured things that victory will only be moment by moment as we abide in Him.

…Is the baggage and residue Satan’s stronghold to destroy you or God’s stronghold to bless and give you abundant life?  It is God’s stronghold!  The very thing that you have been begging God to take away, which you believed would allow you full and unhindered service and fellowship with the King, is the very assurance God has that you will continue to fellowship with and serve Him.  Praise God, His ways are not man’s ways!

…For some reason that we need not know, the majority of Christians are satisfied to walk away from the Lord; God allows it, but is not content until He calls them back to Himself.  Anyone who wants to go from the room called “Carnal” to the suite named “Spiritual” must take the only doorway, named “Trouble, Suffering, and Defeat.”  And so it is with all who are called to return to Him; they must pass through that doorway!

…The Lord spends considerable time teaching us to recognize the baggage and residue when it surfaces.  Those old things (depression, unbelief, desire to do drugs) are flashing red lights informing us that the door is closed.  And here is a secret: the more baggage that one has, the more flashing red lights he has, and the more he will be aware of his need to abide.

…Paul was given a frailty that made him say, “I can’t,” which opened the door to Christ’s life and caused His power to be released.  The more weakness, the more power released; therefore, he would be proud of his limitations.

…God is never, I repeat, never outdone by Satan.  Don’t lament over your past failures, hurts, and identity; they have all been crucified, and their remembrance is but God’s stronghold.

When Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, he is not describing what he would have the Galatians imitate, which would simply produce artificial fruit with no substance or value.  Rather, Paul is describing what a believer manifests when the door to Christ’s life is open.  If you are naturally manifesting love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and so on, you are enjoying life in the Spirit.  However, if these are not present, you can be sure that the door has been closed.

…If you would experience abundant life, it must be embraced moment by moment!

“steal the moment”…that is Satan’s goal.  Right now…this moment…Christ’s life, or the door closed to Him.

I have had “garbage and baggage services” in churches before…I have helped folks to “reclaim the ground” given to Satan…  It is amazing how many live exactly where Michael speaks of: reminded of the past, or fearing the future.  It is time for Christians to be taught and helped to know, understand, reckon, and appropriate the Truth in their lives.  Who Christ is in us, and who we are in Christ.  Get away from the defeated foe!

It is a monumental moment for a Christian to realize the difference between the garbage and residue from the past NOT being Satan’s stronghold, but God’s stronghold!  Is it because Christians seem to be taught to focus on their sin and deficiencies and trying to get a victory over those, instead of focusing on who they are in Christ…and who He is in them?

I watch sporting events all the time…I have NEVER seen the winning team drop their heads, cover their heads with towels, droop their shoulders, and head to the locker room with no shouting, no slapping of hands, no bumping of chests…you know the picture.  So how can we be “overcomers” and “victors” IN CHRIST, and look & act like “losers”?  Aaaah…the lack of teaching of “the power of the Cross”!

That’s NEXT in SIW…

Living Moment By Moment - Part 1

Michael moves us forward in our walk with Christ by giving us a beginning look at the importance of “living moment by moment” and how that can bring us into that very personal relationship with Christ that we want to have.

LIVING MOMENT BY MOMENT – Part 1

excerpt from pages 132-135 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 130-134 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

This is the beginning  of ch. 8
In the previous chapter we learned that even though your old self was crucified with Christ and is dead and buried, you still have a mind cluttered with his baggage; and whenever the door just above your heart is closed to Christ’s life, the enemy tempts you to dabble again in the garbage resident in your mind, causing you to live a replica of the life you did before becoming a Christian.  We thought, does this sound like abundant life?  What could be God’s purpose in all of this be?  His purpose is actually quite ingenious.  It is to make your life moment by moment full of joy, excitement, and authenticity!  How?

…Relationships ever flow; what makes them wonderful is not so much what happened in the past, but what is happening in the present moment…

…God has the aspiration to be in fellowship with us moment by moment; He has a plan to bring about His wishes.  First of all, He must destroy the old self that dwells within and replace it with the life of His Son.  If this is not done, then no fellowship with Him is even possible.  The next thing that He does is to leave all the baggage and residue from the old man in the mind.  When through unbelief a person closes the door to His life within and consequently cuts off fellowship, of necessity all the baggage, garbage, residue, lying emotions, false feeling, old idols, inaccurate identity, and every manifestation of the flesh arise.  In fact, this one is now more miserable than dwelling in the world.  God will strive to build the believer’s awareness of a desire to be free from those miseries 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour, 60 seconds a minute, yes, moment by moment.  It is then that God can do business!  You see, God structures our lives in such a way as to keep us ever near His side.

…It must be firmly planted in our minds that victory is for one moment at a time, and that in any given moment we are participating in eternal victory or eternal defeat.

We need to keep in mind that one of the biggest problems in helping Christians “get out of the wilderness” is far too many preachers, teachers, writers, professors, etc. IGNORE the biblical truth that the “old, Adam life” has been crucified and is dead & buried.  Gone.  No more.  To keep that “Adam life” around is to excuse behaviors in Christians that Jesus has given us His Life to overcome.  So, it is exciting to enjoy Michael addressing life as a Christian from this important biblical truth.

Now that we can focus on the “old mind” (and will & emotions…the rest of the soul we were born with) that is cluttered with the baggage of the “old self,” we can begin to move toward victory!  It is disheartening to hear Christians say, “the devil made me do it,” “the devil has been working me over today,” etc.  That’s not truth!

Michael gives us a step-by-step picture of God’s “ingenious” plan of the life Jesus spoke of in John 10:10…”life (His Life) more abundantly.”
1. God destroys the old self that dwells within an unbeliever and replaces it with the life of His Son when one becomes a Believer.
2. God leaves all the baggage and residue of the old man in the old mind.
3. God now works in the Believer to build an awareness of a desire to be free from the miseries that arise when the “old baggage” of the flesh arise.
4. It is then God can bring us to the realization that victory is for one moment at a time.
(the rest of the book moves us forward into that victory…)

Now, how much easier for a Christian can it be?  God is in charge.  God is orchestrating all to “keep us ever near His side.”  Trust, rest, release control.   We just need to trust Him to give us truth that will set us free completely.  He has.  We need the revelation.

A Closer Look At The Unique Self

Thoughts on Michael Wells’ teachings in Sidetracked In The Wilderness - # 45

Michael’s book is available through:

Abiding Life Ministries International
Littleton, Colorado
(303) 972-0859       www.abidinglife.com

Notice:  this email is part of a BLOG, called Getting Out of the Wilderness.  Why a blog?  So that many can receive the weekly thoughts I express on Michael’s writings in an easy manner.

All sorts of books have been written over the years that try to give us the secret of dealing with our insecurities.  Again and again the writers give us exercises in determining how we can improve ourselves, build upon our weaknesses, strengthen our strengths…and the lists of how we can be working to be stronger and more independent go on and on.  Amazing how man cannot be happy with how God has made us.

Michael points out that God has made us to be what He wants us to be…and to remain dependent upon Him.  Well, amen!

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE UNIQUE SELF

excerpt from pages 127-131 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 125-129 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

When I disciple those critical of others, I immediately ask the question, “What is it about yourself that you do not like?”  It will often be that they are not as intelligent as their friends, or as attractive, or as talented.  Therefore, since they do not love what they are, they must tear everyone else down, finding flaws to ease their own inferiority.

We are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.  If that is true then most neighbors are in for a lot of disappointment when it comes to being loved…

There is a great variety of unique selves in the body of Christ, from those who love following a plan to those who never make a schedule, from those who love working with people to those who’d rather deal with things.  All who are expressing the nature of their unique selves under the control of Christ’s life are a great blessing.

It will be important to discern between the three selves, the one that is crucified, the one to deny, and the one that is to be loved.  The reason that I have spent considerable time explaining the baggage, residue, and old identity is so Self #2 can readily be recognized and denied.  Otherwise, one could try to deny the unique self, the one God made, which is quite uncomfortable and unproductive to do.

Do you love yourself?  You should!  It may take some time to become pleased in what God has made you to be, but once you do, you will stop comparing yourself with others and begin to appreciate the rest of the body of Christ…

…God creates those with great talent, ability, and intellect – no one creates himself – therefore, boasting must not be in the unique self, but rather in God.

You see, talent, ability, and intellect are relative.  Each unique self has its own purpose and usefulness.  We have different gifts, workings, manifestations, bodies, and nationalities, but the same Spirit.  Each of us is a different individual, and yet we are all one; together we experience wholeness.  Paul encouraged those who are not content with the unique self (and, therefore, judge God, their Creator) to love what they are, and at the same time warned those who take pride in what God has made them to be.

You may ask, what is my unique self; how can I discern it?  Knowing your unique self is simple and does not take prolonged inward vision.  Your unique self is determined by those things you do naturally and are most comfortable doing (this is different from the behaviors, such as withdrawal, avoidance, and erroneous fears that may develop through false identity messages).

Just remember, however God has made you, enjoy yourself, love yourself, and refuse to listen to those who would intimidate by boasting of their natural abilities.  Whatever measure He has given you, enjoy it.  If you are not as intellectual as another, that was God’s decision, and if you complain, you make yourself out to be the Creator…

Whoa!  What’s that question, “What is it about yourself that you do not like?”  I was just trying to point out something in someone else that is “clearly evident”… not trying to self-analyze!

Aha.  Michael got me.  And now I have to be honest with myself…what inferiorities do I have?  And if God has made me to be, what am I doing comparing myself with others?  And then will I acknowledge that it may be something that God hasn’t worked out in me yet…or, may never work out in me?

So, Michael once more gives us the way out of the wilderness:
...I am just one of a great variety of unique selves in the body of Christ.
...If I can learn to express the nature of my unique self under the control of Christ, I
can be a great blessing.
...I must learn to love myself, love what I am.
...I must not boast in my unique self, but in God, who made me my unique self.
...I must find what purpose and usefulness my unique self was made to be.

YEA!  This is an easy LIST to accomplish…knowing my unique self is “simple and does
not take prolonged inward vision”…it “is determined by those things I do naturally and are most comfortable doing.”  Well, amen!

So, I am going to acknowledge God has made me, enjoy myself, love myself, and refuse to listen to those who would intimidate by boasting of their natural abilities.  I will enjoy the measure He has given me.  I am not the Creator, and I will quit playing that role.

The Three Selves

Michael introduces some of the most powerful insights into understanding one of the most difficult(?) topics…co-crucifixion.  It seems to be most difficult for so many…  But, just keeping with the simple basics introduced in Scripture takes all the difficulty away, as Michael so eloquently shares with us.  IF you don’t have this book, PLEASE get one (contact ALMI at web address above).  You need to read, digest, and meditate on just what happens “inside” when we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to be our Savior.  I can only share brief excerpts of this detailed discourse covering four pages of the book.

THE THREE SELVES

excerpt from pages 124-127 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 122-125 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

…The unique self is that part of a person that was made in the womb by God (Psalm 139)…although we all have the same purpose in life, which is to fellowship with Him, we will all, as unique creations, express that fellowship in different ways.  I will, therefore, define the unique self as the creation of God that is distinctive to each person…

…you can think of the unique self as a tool that can do nothing on its own, but derives its value from how it is used and by whom…

Self #1 is the unique self under the control of Adam-life; this self belongs to the unbeliever, or unregenerate man, producing a condition called flesh…God’s command concerning this Self #1 is that it be crucified (Galatians 2:20).  The source of the unique self, what is driving it, must die, but not the actual unique self.  Self #1 has a course set in one direction, and it follows every signpost which leads it that way.  Its destination is hell.

The second of the three selves (Self #2) is the unique self under the control of the baggage and residue of the dead and removed Adam-life and the unholy trinity.  This person is a born-again believer in a carnal condition…This person is assured of going to heaven, but will continue to experience hell on earth!  The command regarding this self is to deny it daily (Luke 9:23) by the power of the cross.

Self #3 is very important, being the unique self under the control of Christ’s life within.  The man in this state enters into the fullness of his being.  All of his God-given talents, abilities, intellect, personality, and temperament function properly as they should, and he manifests a condition called walking in the Spirit.  Whatever work the man does, Christ does through him, and he is a blessing to all…The commandment concerning Self #3 is that we are to love it.  “…You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 19:19).

You can see that it is somewhat confusing when we read that we are to have self crucified, to deny self, and at the same time we are to love ourselves.  The above distinction should help clear up the confusion.  We have spoken much of the death of Self #1, and particularly in the next chapter we will examine the denial of Self #2.  I would like to briefly mention the need for love of the unique self as it submits to the Spirit’s rule, Self #3.
This comes in next week’s writing.

Self, what a unique individual…  Perhaps one of the most unique ironies of life is that we all have to live with others who each have a uniqueness that “can do nothing on its own, but derives its value from how it is used and by whom.”  Wow!  That gives us a lot of comfort and confidence to face these others, doesn’t it!?!

This small section of the book requires an adequate amount of reading time to make sure we recognize and understand the three different ways a unique self can be controlled.  A lack of knowing and understanding the last two by so many Christians leads to a majority of those not getting the help to work through and find deliverance from the grip of the carnal life, and into the life God designed for man to live on this earth.

It is very important for any Christian living under the bondage of any baggage and residue of the dead and removed Adam-life and unholy trinity to get some help in reckoning and appropriating the truth of the Christ-life indwelling EVERY Believer.  To have His life and not be enjoying it is as sad as it gets.

In the previous writing we saw where there are many ways we can close the door to Christ’s life in us.  In this continuation of the chapter on “The Loss of the Self-Life,” Michael gives us God’s remedy for…

THE WAY OUT OF A CLOSED DOOR

Let’s assume you are living in defeat.  What happens next?...God alone can break through the darkness in which Satan has the carnal Christian living….with the light of the Holy Spirit, the deceptions of the enemy can be seen clearly.  This no man can do; it must be the work of the Holy Spirit…

When any of us realize the error of our own way, the enemy steps up the attack for fear that all of his long efforts and deep deceptions might be for naught.  He begins to whisper in a voice that is calculated to be confused with conscience…It is all said in hopes that we will not return and learn the true character of God.

This book is for the defeated…If there is one thing I pray you would receive out of the book, it is this, so please take it to heart: the true depth of a person’s faith is revealed in his ability to accept forgiveness in the midst of his deepest defeat.  It is easy to believe that your righteousness is based in Christ when you have not done anything wrong; but you many have a confidence that is not based on Christ’s work but your own…However, failure reveals where you have really put your trust…Many in the midst of failure refuse forgiveness, continuing a self-inflicted punishment until they believe they have paid the price.  Some are so unbelieving that they even begin to make up excuses for why God should not forgive them.

The New Testament writers are not surprised by the fact that saints do sin, and their solution is simple: repentance and pressing on…James 4:7-10.

…If you have ever once experienced freedom from your failure, you can experience it once again, for it is moment by moment.  If as a believer you have shut the door, repent, accept His forgiveness in spite of how you feel, and press on…

That statement about the enemy’s attempts and hopes that we will “not return and learn the true character of God” is one of the most powerful TRUTHS that we must learn.  It is knowing God’s TRUTHFUL CHARACTER that gives us the insights to the freedom that is ours IN CHRIST!  His character gives us the foundation for us to trust Him to the uttermost!  His character tells us ALL He will DO for us, if we trust Him to perform what He has said He will do.  All of His tests of our faith are to determine if we trust Him.  Period.

Thank you, Michael, for pointing us once more to the Light…the light of the Holy Spirit, that shines upon the deceptions of the enemy.  Can’t be done by man…must be done by the Holy Spirit as Michael points out.

And then, Michael gives us insight into the “depth of our faith (trust in God)” by whether we can accept God’s forgiveness in the midst of our deepest defeat.  Our righteousness is not based on us, but Him.  Everything in Christianity is Him, not us.  Jesus is the Christ of Christianity, not us…not our righteousness…not our good works…not our “believing”…not our “claiming”…not us in any way.

Thank you, Jesus, that You are Jesus…and we don’t have to be.  We get to partake of ALL of You, and You will come and be.  Well, amen.

Satan's Fear Of An Open Door

Thoughts on Michael Wells’ teachings in Sidetracked In The Wilderness - # 42

Michael gives us excellent insight into one of the most devastating tools of the Christian’s enemy: tricks to take us into darkness.  God has told us that he is the father of lies, deceitful, a thief…yet we too often easily fall prey to his tricks.  Let Michael show you some of the ways satan will attack…

SATAN’S FEAR OF AN OPEN DOOR

excerpt from pages 118-121 of SIW (5th printing, March 1998)
excerpt from pages 115-119 of SIW (14th printing, March 2012)
                   (used with permission from ALMI):

If you choose to believe and walk in your co-crucifixion with Christ, life will often get worse before it gets better, with dangers increasing.  For you become a threat to the enemy…as Christ lives His life through you, you are dangerous!...

Satan’s plan is very simple; he must get you out of the light!...I have personally found that Jesus makes life make sense, and once I find myself out of His light, life has no center or meaning.  Therefore, the enemy wants to draw us out of Christ’s light into his darkness….

The enemy has a myriad of tricks to take us into darkness.  Usually he will begin to tempt us with the same kind of situations and events that gave us our negative identities from the past.  He will try to push our button, so to speak, to drive us back to a carnal existence.

…there are certain buttons the enemy has pushed for years to make you ineffective; once you are living out of Christ’s life, he simply won’t go away!  On the contrary, he will push buttons all the more frantically to get the responses of the past.  When you see this happening, do take heart, for you have truly found the answer; if you hadn’t, the enemy would not be attacking you.

…the enemy will try everything at his disposal to emotionally beat a believer…Be watchful; it may happen when we are on vacation and out of the daily fellowship we normally have with our Savior.  It may occur during times of stress…It may be the result of a person whose situation or action draws our eyes off the Lord…Even our work for the Lord can become so important that we neglect Him.  It can especially take place in times of loneliness and failure.  The list is endless, but the result is the same: We close the door to His life, and in so doing, we begin to live much as we did before we were born again.

Not only will the enemy use circumstances and people, but he will attack with a new level of temptations that the unregenerate world rarely experiences…

So it is with the deep deceptions of the enemy.  If we knew his plan for destruction ahead of time, we would think it impossible.  However, if we knew his timetable and the effort that would be placed into the deception day by day, we would be filled with fear.  Is it any wonder we are called to be alert, stand fast, take heed, and not be ignorant of the enemy?

…The spiritual man must be aware of temptations that are not calculated to bring immediate defeat, but downfall years away.

The total writing of Michael’s for this day is a strong capture of the insidious attacks of satan on Christians.  Our failure to be alert, stand fast, take heed, and to be ignorant of the enemy is what so often leads to our downfall.  Michael gives us some outstanding insights into the myriad of attacks the enemy has.  Let us read, meditate, and move to keep the door to Christ’s life open all the time!

Next time we see how to get out of living in defeat…
