In this short excerpt we see Michael giving us the one critical truth regarding our ever having the “abundant life” Jesus talked about, and…Michael’s testimony of what it took for him to find it.  Enjoy this, but most of all: get it!

REFUSING TO TRUST MYSELF

excerpt from pages 15-16 of SIW (used with permission from ALMI):

God’s answer for abundant life will always be unbelievably simple: The Christian must learn to believe and receive its simplicity.  His answers require faith – faith we may not know we possess – not great talent, ability, or intellect.  The problem is not that God places on us a great and difficult task to perform in order to experience His peace, rest, and joy.  On the contrary, the problem is that we place on ourselves these great tasks and set for ourselves a standard of acceptance that is higher than God’s.  Therefore, all who would enter into the life of faith and rest must first experience the struggle and failure that come from their own effort to change.  We will only give up on ourselves and turn to God’s simple answer after we have exhausted every other conceivable resource.  God’s answer is simple, but in order for Him to bring us to a place of accepting it, He must first put us through a series of courses that will exhaust us, leaving us despairing of self and others and prepared to listen to whatever God says with a believing heart.  It is not until man refuses to trust himself that he will begin to trust God.  Many defeated Christians are merely in the process of learning to give up on themselves.

I began my Christian life in simple faith, standing at the foot of the cross.  However, through unbelief I left that position, looking for capabilities within and trusting in self, much like Israel in the wilderness.  The further I journeyed from the cross, the more lost and confused I became until I decided to return to where I began; it was there that I found the simplicity lost!  Take heart, for it is God’s plan to bring all to a life of peace and joy.  “If God is for us, who is against us?” (Romans 8:31)

Travelling around the world, I have found many godly believers who live a life desirable to all of us.  One question that I immediately ask upon meeting such a one is, “How did you get to be such a spiritual person?”

The answer is always the same.  “I don’t know; God brought me this far.”  Not once has anyone told me it was because he belonged to a particular denomination or subscribed to a certain doctrine!  It is rather because God brought him along, so take heart!  God shows no partiality, and He will also take you where you need to go!

Two things stood out most for me in this day’s writing (even though almost every sentence held a powerful thought):
1.     It takes God putting us “through a series of courses that will exhaust us, leaving us despairing of self and others and prepared to listen to whatever God says with a believing heart.”  REFUSING TO TRUST IN MYSELF.  Seriously!?!  Can I not learn after just a FEW failures!  Yes, that’s me!
2.    And then just like a lightning bolt…”until I decided to return to where I began.”  Yes!  I began “in simple faith, standing at the foot of the cross” just like Michael!  And suddenly, all those verses about living by faith, believing, trusting…they all took on new meaning.  Remember that great gospel hymn:

“Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings within and fears without, O Lamb of God, I come!  I come!

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come!  I come!”

Isn’t it amazing, it all begins at the foot of the cross in simple faith.  So, how could man move us away from there when Christianity is all about HIM and OUR BELIEVING.  Everything in Christianity is about HIM and OUR BELIEVING.  Simple.

Thank you, Michael, that at the very start of this wonderful book, you have given us the foundation you will build upon to take us back to the foot of the cross in our daily life.

Why have we left the “simple” life…the uncomplicated, unfragmented, unbelievably wonderful life that God speaks about in His Holy Scriptures?  When Michael mentions “jumping through all the hoops” in today’s writing, my mind instantly thought of “March Madness,” that crazy, wild, complicated, overexcitement all college basketball fans have come to love…the epitome of most Christians’ lives today times twelve.  And the “chance” of reaching the “Final Four” in life is about as likely as my favorite college team making it in the Hoop world.

And what’s wild is the “simple” life isn’t about strategies/methods, recruiting a team, programs, physical ability, mental ability, schedules, a scoreboard, etc., etc., etc.  Read what Coach Michael tells us is the simplicity of living the “simple” life.

ABIDING: PARTICIPATING IN JESUS’ LIFE

excerpt from page 14 of SIW (used with permission of ALMI):

One key word that would describe the Christian community around the world is change.  We want to change what we are, what we do, and our circumstances so we will be
acceptable to God.  And yet after jumping through all the hoops prescribed by a particular method or program, change has not come, and we sense even more deeply our unacceptableness and failure.

If then it is so simple to live a defeated life, would it not be good news that it is equally easy to live the victorious life.  What is the answer?  It will be found in the simplicity of the Gospel – a simplicity that has been lost in the shuffle of programs, methods, and how-to lists, all symptoms of unbelief!  The answer is not something that we must do but rather something that we must believe!  The great secret of success that has been concealed from the majority of Christians far too long is this: Christian growth is simply accepting what we have always had from the beginning, from the first day we gave our lives to Christ!  And this simple life – the victorious life – will be experienced only through the abiding life.

Abundant life is not something to work for, but rather is something given to be worked from.  My acceptance is not based on what I do but rather on what I am.  Abundant life does not require that I imitate Jesus, but that I participate in His life; it does not require that I work to believe, but that I work because I believe.  Be assured of this: If the abundant Christian life requires great determination, self-will, intellect, talent, and ability, then we are all too weak, blind, and stupid to ever arrive.

How then do I experience this abundant life?  How do I discover a life free from sin?  And how can it be mine without effort?  God’s answer is specifically designed to be within the grasp of the weak, the failure, the unacceptable, the ignorant, the frustrated, and the hopeless.  The answer is the simplicity of the abiding life.

Not much to write in response to this day’s writing…thank the Lord for that…just abiding.  Not something we do, rather something given to be worked from.  It is simply a matter of my believing.  Ooops…there comes the complication…I JUST have to believe.  The simple life evades the Unbelieving Believers.

Lord I choose to believe You today, and let You live Your life through me.  Amen.

In this second writing I continue with some of the basic introductory thoughts that Michael shared…thoughts that are needed in order to proceed on to victory.  After all, we all know that if we don’t know or admit WHERE we are, how are we ever going to get somewhere else…or, want to.  As you read, note how many of these same self-defeating “ways” you have had to go through to get to the point you are desiring to get out of the wilderness.

SOMETHING THAT DID NOT REQUIRE FAITH

excerpt from pages 12-13 of SIW (used with permission from ALMI)

“…I decided to attend Bible college and then graduate school, where the emphasis was really quite simple: Success rested on my intellect, ability, talents, and appearance.  If all of these could be perfected to some measure, I would be a success – I would be acceptable to God and to His people.  How I envied the student or professor who could preach from the original Greek text.  If only I had the natural ability to speak, to be witty, to be clever; if I could just sing or play an instrument, then I would be living the abundant life!  Maybe I could memorize the whole Bible as some had, ask the audience to pick a Scripture verse, and then quote the one before it and the one after it – yes, then I would have arrived.

There was, of course, great emphasis on a variety of programs.  Many renowned speakers came and shared their recipes for success.  We all took notes vigorously, knowing that each must be presenting the much-needed procedure.  I knew that I would not be able to adhere to the program in my own life, but at least I could condemn others for not completing it and pin the blame on them for its failure.  After all, if they were truly committed Christians they would do better.  Little did I know that I was looking for something seen, something of this world, something that did not require faith, some type of magic formula to deliver me from myself and others from the same state of defeat.

Why was it that Christianity was so difficult for me?”

(underlining is my emphasis – LM)

Well, how many did you count?  Amazing, isn’t it…  One day I had this thought: perhaps the reason so many of the speakers, writers, professors, and counselors are always giving “x number of things to do” to find success in the Christian life is because we were trained years ago to get into “self-help” or “self-do” projects and programs.  One time my wife and I took a group of couples from our church to a well-known marriage conference.  It was like what is described: 4 ways to _____, 2 things to _______, 5 ideas to __________, etc., etc.  An interesting thing happened to one of our couples: they actually decided to get a divorce ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE CONFERENCE!

Michael came to the conclusion: none of this required FAITH.  Incredible.  God told His people over and over: “Now the just shall live by FAITH…”(Hebrews 10:38). “But without FAITH it is impossible to please Him…”(Hebrews 11:6).  “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him:”(Colossians 2:6).  How can much of the teaching, preaching, and writing tell us to do the opposite of FAITH?  And get us to the point of “looking for something seen, something of this world… some type of magic formula to deliver me…”  Something that does not require FAITH.

Thank God that God showed Michael the FAITH route to victory.  Beginning next week we start to walk along the path that gets us out of the wilderness.  Well, amen.

This writing begins a new entry into the world of Michael Wells, whom I consider one of the greatest Christian disciplers of all time.  Sidetracked In The Wilderness has provided phenomenal help to thousands of “defeated Christians” worldwide, answers that have helped them “find the way back to a victorious, abundant life” in Christ.  Join me as we travel through the book, and expound on what I see as some of the most meaningful points that I have used in discipling the Saints God has given me opportunity to know.

IMITATING JESUS
excerpt from pages 11-12 of SIW (used with permission from ALMI):

“…I had never pondered the question, but to my surprise an answer came out:  ‘God is calling me to minister to defeated Christians.’  I knew in that moment this was exactly God’s plan for my life.  I did not spend much time questioning this except to wonder at the very thought of there being defeated Christians.  I have often thought that if I had known what such a calling meant, I would have argued with the Lord and asked for a different job description.  For at that moment I did not know that in order to minister to defeated Christians, I must become defeated myself.

My fall to the life of defeat that I lived for the next nine years took a relatively short time.  Soon prayer had become a struggle, Scripture had lost its attraction, unconquerable sins appeared on all sides, and the emotional awareness of God had disappeared!

I coped with my defeats and failures in a variety of ways.  I read self-help and how-to books which all promised to give me one-time relief.  Those how-to books eloquently described my condition but sent me away powerless to escape.  The more I read, the more frustrated, angry, and depressed I became.  They told me of the great example of Jesus, how He prayed, fasted, helped others, worshipped, was devout, fed the hungry, and loved – and then they told me to imitate Him!  Didn’t they realize that I wanted to be like Jesus and I wanted to please God, but I simply couldn’t?  Didn’t they realize that if I could imitate Jesus, He would not have had to come?

Michael mentions God’s PLAN for his life…not God’s WILL for his life.  Big difference.  God’s WILL is God’s heart.  God’s PLAN is His divine directive in our lives.  We make choices seeking God’s heart in a matter.  Too many Christians get defeated by worrying about whether they are “in the will of God, or not”…thinking about some “perfect” plan God has for their life.  Sad.  What a tragedy…to miss God by not even thinking as God is thinking.  Especially when every Christian has the mind of Christ.  God has already told us…see Prov. 3:5-6.  Michael walked with God.  He knew God’s plan for his life, as well as God’s heart in the matter.

Why would Jesus come just to be an example?  What a horrible death for God to experience for only coming in the flesh JUST to live a life that we might have an EXAMPLE of how we are supposed to live our life.  Wow…how could man ever think that?  (oh, that’s what LOST people think…oops, and some SAVED).  Well, thank God, He has spoken to that…John 15:1-5 and Galatians 2:20 in the KJV.

We could imitate from the writings of Scripture…but, then His life would have not been necessary.  So, what do you do with all the “do’s” and “don’ts” in Scripture.  A hint:  Jesus spoke to that in Matthew, ch. 13…search it out.

And also, if a person could “earn” their way to Heaven, Jesus died on the Cross for no reason at all.  That’s a startling fact to soak on too, isn’t it?

Well, no one likes defeat.  So we will find all sorts of great truths that “set the captives free” and bring what we all love to sing about: “Oh, Victory in Jesus!”  Come…enjoy the trip through the land of grace in the coming weeks.  For those of us who knew Michael, we can picture him speaking and sharing these great truths.  May God really get ahold of you and you sense His presence.  And if you get anything from it, let someone else know how to climb aboard!

Give ‘em Jesus!
